Relics of Buddha – Inauguration Ceremony March 28 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

March 28, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

A truly auspicious occasion is almost upon us, one that we have the great privilege of supporting. On the evening of the 28th of March we will be hosting the Official Inauguration Ceremony for the arrival of Relics of Shakyamuni Buddha at Orassy, our centre in London.

We will be joined by honoured guests Khamba Lama Natsagdorj (Vajra Yana) of Mongolia, Lama Jampa Gyamtso ((Buddha Dharma) of Italy and the custodian of the Holy Relics Yeshe Marco (Nyingma Kagyu – non sectarian).

We would be most honoured if you could join us for this special event and to receive its many blessings. This event is open to all, so please join us for this historic occasion!

The Relics will also be available to be viewed each day until the 31st of March.

*All donations will go towards the Buddha Bhavana Society in Switzerland to fund its activities and build a place of retreat featuring a stupa to preserve the Relics.

More information on the Relics

Donated to the Swiss monk, Ven. Yesheé Gyatso by Ven. Sultanagoda Janaananda Thero – abbot of the monastery of Sri Waradanaramaya Malimbada, Sri Lanka where they were kept in the stupa attached to the temple from the 18th century.

Historical sources indicate that Ven. Mahinda, son of Indian emperor Ashoka was sent to the island of Sri Lanka in the third century. B.C., following Buddha’s prophecy that foretold his teachings would have be destroyed in India. It is from here that Buddhism would initially spread to countries located in the East and throughout Asia.

Ven. Mahinda, accompanied by six other missionaries, established Buddhism in Sri Lanka, bringing with them the relics – including the bowl of the Buddha, and the first texts of the Buddhist canon.

In appreciation for the teachings received, the king of island Devanampiya Tissa offered to the monks the monastery of Mahameghavana Anuradhapura where he built a great stupa: the Mahavihara (still a daily pilgrimage) in order to preserve the relics brought by Ven . Mahinda.

These were distributed in successive periods in the monasteries that were built throughout the country in observance of the Buddhist tradition of Sri Lanka, which provides that in order to found a monastery you must be able to receive even a small part of the relics, since they represent the very presence of the Buddha mind.
